Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

2020 has been an unusual year, to say the least. It is more than the pandemic, natural disasters, and civil unrest; metallic monoliths are also appearing and disappearing in areas around the world over the past several weeks.

It started in Utah and later, Romania, but then a monolith appeared in California. All of them disappear shortly after appearing. The latest appeared on a UK beach over the weekend.

The first monolith that was discovered was in Utah. State public safety officials were flying in a helicopter overhead when they spotted the large, metallic statute. The first monolith was only found a few weeks ago but it seems as if it may have been there since 2016.

According to local TV station KSLTV, operations pilot Brett Hutchings said that the helicopter was landed so they could go have a look at the object. According to his estimation, the structure was up to 12 feet tall, man-made, and placed at that location on purpose. He also said that it looked a lot like the monolith in the movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

“We were kind of joking around that if one of us suddenly disappears, then the rest of us make a run for it,” Hutchings said.

Not long after being found, it disappeared. The disappearance was reported by the Bureau of Land Management in Utah on November 28.

According to the New York Times, a photographer saw four men taking the monolith apart and removing it from the desert. The event was also posted to Instagram.

According to a BASE (Buildings, Antennas, Spans, Earth) jumping guide, Andy Lewis, it was removed by him and his partners to keep the area protected from such a man-made structure and from damage caused by those trying to find it.

A video was posted on YouTube of the removal.

In Romania, a second monolith appeared shortly after on November 27, which just so happened to be the day the first one vanished. In fact, there was a slight overlap of their existences.

Social media was buzzing with pictures and videos of the latest sighting.

There was a difference between the first and the second. The second one was flatter and had a triangle shape. It also was not welded quite so neatly, as the other one was riveted.

According to the mayor of the city, Andrei Carabelea, there wasn’t too much concern over the object. He posted it on Facebook and then made fun of some of the theorists who were saying it came from an alien race. He also was upset that a building permit wasn’t received for the structure.

“Piatra Neamț hosts a mysterious object,” the mayor said in the post. “My guess is that some naughty and terrifying alien teenagers have left home with their parents’ UFOs and started planting metal monoliths around the world. First in Utah and then in Piatra Neamț. I am honored that they chose our city. I would have appreciated their bold gesture more if they had followed the rules and followed the legal steps to obtain a building permit.”

The monolith in Romania disappeared on December 1.

In California, another monolith was soon discovered on December 2.

The 10 foot tall, 18-inch wide monolith was perched on top of Atascadero’s Pine Mountain. Hikers ascended the mountain to get a look at the new structure. It seems as if this monolith was not attached so it was a risk.

The monolith in California disappeared by December 3, with a group of young men taking credit as they chanted “Christ Is King.” It seems as if they traveled five hours to remove the monolith and replace it with a wooden cross in front of an audience of hundreds.

In the UK, a new monolith appeared on the beach on December 6. It was found by a resident of the Isle of Wight, Lee Peckham. He took a picture and uploaded it to Twitter.

The owner of the land, UK’s National Trust, does not plan on removing the monolith, even though it was illegally erected, according to BBC News.

People are heading to the beach to see the new addition. According to BBC, DJ Rob da Bank, a local resident, said: “I’m not sure if it’s aliens, a Coldplay PR stunt or a local mirror dealer drumming up trade, but it got us all down the beach anyway.”

There are plenty of questions that surround the mysterious appearance and disappearance of the first three monoliths. Some people wonder if it is a prank, others may feel it is aliens. It may even be a strange marketing ploy for some type of new product.

There are also people who are coming up with their own theories:

McDonald’s is also having some fun with it as well.
