2020 is officially here, and with it are new food trends – for better or for worse. We’ve seen unicorn frappucinos, galaxy cupcakes, charcoal-based everything, cake pops, and so much more. What’s next? We’re glad you asked! Below we have a list of things experts and trendsetters believe will take 2020 by storm. Read on to see what products are projected to hit the top of the charts this year. You can even tell people you were into it before it was cool.

Seaweed

While seaweed is nothing new, it’s popularity in America sure is. Other cultures incorporate dried seaweed in a number of dishes, including sushi. This year, however, there will be a number of options for consuming seaweed. Chips, smothies, salads, soups, even desserts! Why do people think 2020 is the year of seaweed? For starters, it’s very good for you! Seaweed is high in vitamins and antioxidants, plus it’s good for thyroid and gut health. Seaweed also grows fast and sustainably.

Jackfruit

With more and more people going vegan or vegetarian, it’s no surprise that meat substitutes are on the rise. Who would have thought that a fruit would be a surprisingly authentic substitute for meat? jackfruit is usually grown in Southeast Asia, and can weigh up to 25lbs! In that region, some people call jackfruit by its other name – tree goat! This fruit is low cal, low carb, and high in protein and vitamins.

Oat Milk

By now you probably know of a few milk alternatives. Soy, almond, even coconut. But have you heard of oat milk? You certainly will this year! A Swedish-based company recently opened up an oat milk factory in New Jersey, and sales are already skyrocketing. In the last two years, oat milk sales went from $4.4 million to $29 million!

All of the Butter

So far, these trends have skewed in the direction of healthy, sustainable, and plant-based. This next one breaks the mold a little bit, and we could not be more excited. Why? One word: Butter. We love butter, as you probably know. In 2020, we’re going to see a ton of different varieties that are perfect for spreads and dips. Sure, there’s regular butter, peanut butter, and almond butter, but this year, expect to see things like pumpkin butter, watermelon seed butter, and chickpea butter.
