The field of color psychology may not be one that’s establishing clinical trials or pushing treatments. But, this fringe area of study is used constantly in marketing. Certain colors can drive certain feelings or indicate action or inaction. Taking this line of thought a step further there are theories that what colors you are drawn to personally can indicate what type of personality traits you possess. This interesting field seeks to associate certain colors with certain archetypes, but whether or not it’s correct is something you’ll have to decide on your own. See if the traits (described below) connected to your favorite color truly describe you or not.

Red

People who often choose red or say it’s their favorite color are thought to aspire to power and may have thrill-seeking tendencies. By some estimations they can also be overly logical. They can also be perceived as impulsive, reckless, or intimidating. Red in advertising is often used to initiate some sort of action and this color is not associated with stagnation or complacency.

Green

This color is the most prevalent in nature and is why we are attuned to the many hues it offers. People who gravitate towards green are said to be practical, down-to-earth, and good at problem solving. They may also seek stability and security above all else.

Blue

People who choose blue as their favorite color are often artists and creative thinkers who are good at coming up with unusual ways to fix things. They can be excellent caretakers, but can also be prone to becoming controlling and may seek stability in every situation.

Yellow

People who choose yellow are considered to be hopeful, optimistic, and cheerful. Adventurous and carefree are some other words used to describe these typically happy people.

Orange

Folks who favor orange are said to be balanced, highly sociable, and to enjoy their freedom more than others. As a mix of both red and yellow this assessment seems to blend the two more than other secondary colors. This color is associated with action, but unlike red is rarely seen as intimidating.

Purple

This color has long been associated with royalty and people who love purple can come across as unapproachable or arrogant. But, they are also typified as unique, witty, and creative.

Pink

Pink has been considered a feminine color since the 1950s, but it has elements of both white and red- 2 of the most opposite in terms of personality. Pink aficionados are thought of as fun and as having big hearts. They are also seen as being very loyal to their family and friends.

White

The absence of color is itself one of the most popular colors. White is associated with cleanliness in advertisements, but it’s also the inadvertent background to many ads. It’a slo used to tone down certain colors and to provide contrast. People who wear a lot of white or enjoy it in their homes are thought to seek balance and serenity. These people can be associated with confidence, innocence, or order.

Black

Technically black is every color combined so you might assume that someone whose fave color is black should be a mix of all the above personalities. However, black is associated in most Western countries as being gloomy and having to do with death. About the best thing that someone who holds the darkest of all colors in favor is that they are strong willed people who can be quite bold. In marketing materials black is seen as being tough, which aligns with how someone who enjoys black may be seen by others.
