Three experiments that are sure to entertain and delight!
Looking for some fun crafts and experiments to do with the kiddos? Or maybe you’re in the mood for a little experimenting yourself! Either way, we’ve got three creative salt experiments that are sure to entertain and delight! Which one are you going to try first?
DIY Lava Lamp
How cool is this? What kid doesn’t want an awesome lava lamp? The best part is, you probably already have everything on hand for this fun little project. A glass container, water, oil, food coloring, and salt. That’s it. Keep scrolling to see how easy it is to make this lava lamp!
Simply fill a glass three-quarters of the way full with water. Add in some oil and a few drops of food coloring. Then, pour a generous amount of salt into the glass, and watch a lava lamp form in front of your very eyes!
What a fun little experiement for the kiddos to watch and observe over a few days’ time. Start by cutting out your desired shape from paper board. This is where you can be really creative – tree, porcupine, cat, whatever fun little shape you can dream up (and draw).
Paint the shape with food coloring and set it up in a shallow dish that can capture liquid. Next, pour potassium phosphate, that is, the salts of both potassium and phosphate ions, over the shape. You can purchase a bottle of potassium phosphate online for fairly cheap. Finally, let your experiement sit and watch it grow crystals! You’ll start to see results in a few hours, and the crystals keep growing for up to a day or more.
This final project is fun and can keep the kiddos entertained for quite a while. Plus, they’ll be cleaning money. Win-win! Simply pour some vinegar in a container and add salt. Mix until combined. Dip the money in the mixture and rub clean. Fun and easy!
