Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Take a walk down any neighborhood on any given day and you’re bound to see a variety of different decorations and flags. But these items might go beyond just personal preferences and taste.

A lot of times, people like to try and draw attention to social issues that they find important. So, the next time that you’re passing someone’s house and they have a colored porch light, it might go beyond just someone’s favorite color.

For example, if you see a green porch light, it’s probably a neighbor bringing attention to veterans’ issues. But a green porch light isn’t the only colored light that holds an important meaning. We also want to shine a light on the meaning behind purple porch lights.

If you should ever see a purple porch light then you should pay attention as it’s there to bring awareness regarding domestic violence.

The Purple Light Night movement is one that doesn’t just want to raise awareness about domestic violence, but it also wants to remind those trapped in situations that there are safe places out there with people who are willing to help. Because of this, the movement has adopted the motto, “shine a light and save a life.”

Of course, that’s not the only color with a cause. Red porch lights are meant to bring awareness to women’s heart health.

Blue porch lights, on the other hand, are meant to raise awareness for autism. So, next time you see a colored porch light it probably means something deeper than just being a pretty color. It’s also a reminder that we can choose to shine a light on the things that matter to us too!
