Why do Oreos taste so good? What is it about that recipe that has any imitators left so far in the dust. I don’t really need to know what makes it all so good, I just enjoy without question. But since National Oreo Cookie Day is on the horizon, I felt this was a good time to do some thinking about all things Oreo.

March 6 is National Oreo Cookie Day and I know that none of us need an official day to celebrate the greatness of the Oreo cookie, but I thought it would be fun to learn a little bit more about this beloved treat in honor of the holiday. And as much as I enjoy a traditional Oreo cookie and milk combo, I’ve decided to celebrate with an Oreo dessert that has a little octane to it, an Oreo cookie milkshake with a boozy twist. But first, some fun facts about the Oreo cookie.

  • Oreos were first introduced to American consumers in March of 1912, March 6th, 1912 to be exact.
  • Nabisco originally released two Oreo cookies, lemon meringue, and the chocolate, but the latter became the most popular.
  • The Oreo cookie is the world’s best selling cookie! 450 BILLION Oreo cookies have been sold across the globe since they were first introduced in 1912.
  • PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has stamped the Oreo cookie as “vegan”, although Nabisco is careful to warn of the possibility of cross-contamination. And as of 1998, the cookie is also identified as “kosher.”
  • 71% cookie 29% cream is the ratio for making the perfect cookie.
