Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

‘Tis the season for all things holiday-related! We don’t know about you, but we’ve got our tree all set up and mostly decorated. There always seems to be a few empty spots, no matter how we rearrange the ornaments. That’s why we’re glad we found this tutorial on easy, homemade ornaments using an unlikely ingredient: baking soda! Yes, with some baking soda, corn starch, and water, you can have the perfect ornaments to fill in all of those empty spaces on the tree. Go ahead and see how fun and easy this project is! The kiddos would love to get involved in this holiday DIY!

Combine Ingredients

Start out by making a dough of sorts. Combine 1 3/4 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of corn starch, and 1 cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir the mixture constantly until a thick paste starts to form. Then, remove from heat and wrap up the dough in tin foil. Let it cool for a while before handling.

Prep The Dough

Put the ball of dough in a bowl and add glitter (either white or colored, depending on your prefereances), and then fold in a few drops of essential oils like peppermint or pine. This step is optional, of course, but how fun is it to have an ornament that smells like Christmas? Once the glitter and oils are mixed in, roll out the dough much like you would cookie dough.

Stamp & Dry

Next, use stamps and cookie cutters to create the shapes you want. Try out different sizes and shapes for a nice variety. Lay your shapes out on a flat surface and poke holes in the top to string ribbon or string through. Let dry for at least two days before hanging up. You can also paint these ornaments once they are dry for an added layer of creativity.
