Baked Spiced Apples and Berries by Eileen Hamilton

What could possibly outshine the turkey on Thanksgiving? This sweet and savory side dish could!

One of the best parts of Thanksgiving dinner is the side dishes. There’s always something savory but there’s also something sweet. Eileen Hamilton submitted her baked savory-sweet side dish to our 2021 Thanksgiving Sides Recipe contest. This dish is made with those familiar fruity flavors of thanksgiving, apples, cranberries, and raisins. It gets delicious flavor and texture from the addition of warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and nuttiness from walnuts. As Eileen describes, her baked spiced apples and berries are a “wonderful complement to a holiday dinner.”

  • 6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 cups frozen berries
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 4 chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate juice
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons allspice
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Combine fruit and nuts in a baking dish.
  3. Mix the spices together in a separate bowl, then add water and juice and pour over fruit.
  4. Cover and bake at 375°F for approx 45 minutes, stirring halfway through to distribute the liquid over the apples again.
