4th of July fudge

When it comes to sweet treats, there’s nothing quite like colorful desserts to really add that fun touch to the table. For the 4th of July, the patriotic colors of red, white, and blue really make the day feel festive. With this tricolor easy fudge recipe, you can whip up a batch for Independence Day and create a showstopping table display that also happens to be very delicious.

4th of July fudge

To start making this dessert you’ll heat together evaporated milk, sugar, and butter. Once that’s come to a boil you add the marshmallow creme and white chocolate chips. This is by far the easiest way to make fudge and the result is truly mouthwatering.

After the ingredients are melted together you’ll divide the mixture into thirds using three bowls. To one bowl add a few drops of red food coloring and a few drops of blue food coloring to another bowl. A third bowl is for the (uncolored) white fudge.

Using a separate spoon for each color mix in the food coloring. Then layer the hot fudge in a loaf pan or other container- first red, then white, then blue. It’s important to put the white in the middle so that the red and blue fudge layers never mix together. To create the swirled effect you’ll insert a butter knife into the pan until it almost reaches the bottom, then drag it through all the colors in a random pattern. Don’t over mix at this stage or else you could end up with some purple streaks.

Let cool for at least 2 hours and you’ve got yourself a wonderful 4th of July dessert. The great thing about this recipe is that you can easily adapt it for other seasons and holidays as well. Use black and orange for Halloween, red and green for Christmas, or pastel colors for Easter. And, for a fun fudge anytime you can use 4 random colors to make tie dye fudge. It really is a versatile recipe for those who love white chocolate fudge and completes the holiday BBQ or picnic table beautifully.

Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 5-oz can evaporated milk
  • 2 cups marshmallow creme
  • 1 1/3 cups white chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red and blue gel food coloring
Preparation
  1. Line a 9x5 loaf pan with foil and set aside. Ready three heat-safe bowls and three spatulas for creating the fudge layers.
  2. In a large saucepan combine butter, sugar, and evaporated milk. Boil for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
  3. Add marshmallow creme and white chocolate chips and stir again until they are melted. Add vanilla extract at the last minute. Do not over heat the mixture. Once melted removed from heat.
  4. Working quickly, divide the fudge between the three bowls. Add a few drops of red food coloring to one and a few drops of blue to another. Stir in coloring using only the spatula or spoon for that color. Do not mix colors.
  5. Pour the fudge into the loaf pan in layers in the order of red, white, and finally blue. Smooth each layer with the back of a clean spoon.
  6. Once all the layers are in, take a knife and drag it through all the layers, nearly touching the bottom of the pan. Work quickly as this is a quick set fudge.
  7. Allow fudge to fully set for at least 2 hours before cutting into small squares about 1 inch wide.
