Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

It’s no secret that we love baking around here. Whether it’s pies, cakes, cookies, or some combination like this snickerdoodle cheesecake apple pie, we just can’t get enough of these sugary treats! Sometimes, however, our ambition is met with a lack of experience. We’ve all had our fair share of disappointing “fails” in the kitchen, but no more! Here are some of our favorite baking tips to make every experience in the kitchen a success!

Always Apply A Crumb Coat

No, this isn’t a term for what your coat looks like after you shove an entire piece of cake into your mouth as you head out the door (or is that just me?), it’s a base layer of frosting you put on a cake. Once your cake has cooled, you should apply a thin layer of frosting between layers and all over the cake. Don’t worry too much what it looks like, this is the “rough draft” of the final frosting. Chill the cake for at least an hour, then take it out and frost again, this time making it pretty! Need some frosting recipes? We’ve got you covered right here!
