Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Like solving the riddle of the sphinx, so too is unlocking the mystery of how to cut a watermelon without butchering the fruit or cutting yourself. Watermelons come in various sizes, but their round or oblong shape does make them rather difficult to cut. We’ve found a clever way to not only cut up, but to serve up this summertime favorite, and it’s so simple, you’ll wonder why you’ve never done it this way before!

Now, many of you out there will already be familiar with this method. Lucky you! Because for those of us who didn’t know, this is downright revolutionary. You’ll need a good knife, a steady hand, and a little bit of patience to pull off this carving technique. Once you’ve done it, you may never go back to triangular slices again! As always, exercise caution when working with a knife, and to make the watermelon less slippery, consider setting it on top of a dish towel to help with grip. Once the melon is cut in half (the hardest part), then begin slicing out a simple grid. Once done all you have to do is pull out a perfect sized watermelon slice.

Finding clever ways to do everyday kitchen tasks is actually pretty fun. And while many of these “hacks” have been around for a long time, for many of us these are new and fresh ways to tackle tedious kitchen tasks. We love watermelon in the summertime, and no matter how you slice it, it’s guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser. Family and friends will marvel at your knife skills while enjoying sweet and juicy bites of this beloved summertime treat.
