8. Cinnamon

Cinnamon Tree
So it might not come as the biggest surprise that cinnamon sticks are actually little, scrolled up pieces of inner bark from tree species of the “Cinnamomum” genus. Even though cinnamon sticks already look like bits of bark, we were still surprised to find that that’s literally what they are! Cheers to the person who saw the first cinnamon tree and thought to chop it up and try the inner bark as a food….

7. Kiwi

Tree of kiwi fruit
If you thought that kiwis grew on normal trees (which is what we thought), you’d be quite wrong. Instead of one, big tree, kiwis actually grow on vines, much like how grapes grow, propped up to support the weight of the long, kiwi-ridden vines. It looks pretty picturesque, just make sure one doesn’t fall on you!

6. Peanuts

Holding peanut stem in the farmland
So seeing how pistachios and cashews grow on trees, you would think peanuts follow suit, right?? Wrong. Peanuts don’t grow on trees at all, they grow in the ground! In fact, peanuts are basically just edible seeds, almost like the roots of a plant that grows and blooms like a flower – if you’d showed us a pretty yellow bud and told us it was a peanut flower, we wouldn’t have believed you, but now we know! Peanuts are not only a tasty seed (although we refer to them as nuts), but can also be a really pretty plant in general!

5. Pineapples

Pineapple
All right, this one is weird. Is it just us, or does the idea of looking out at a field of short, stubby bushes with pineapples sprouting from the centers seem ridiculous?? Like, it’s also kind of awesome at the same time, but definitely a little weird and not at all how we envisioned pineapples growing. Are we alone in thinking that?

If you love cashews but have never thought about how they grow, definitely click the Next Page button to find out – it’s crazy-looking!
